Bike, E-Bike & Scooter Policy

Would you like your student to be able to ride a bike, e-bike, or scooter to school?

Beginning at the third grade, students may be allowed to ride their bicycles/ e-bikes to and from school. This is a privilege and students are expected to comply with the rules.

  1. Please read the rules and preparation steps below.
  2. Parent Permission & Student Safety Pledge - Click HERE to review, sign, and return the form below to the school main office before riding to school.   This form is REQUIRED for your student to ride bikes, e-bikes, and scooters to school and store them on campus during the school day.

GENERAL BICYCLING RULES TO FOLLOW:

  • Protect Your Head: Always wear a helmet that fits properly (snug, level on your head, two fingers above your eyebrows) and keep the chin strap buckled tightly.
  • Do the "ABC" Check: Before leaving home, check your Air (tires pumped tight), Brakes (squeeze levers to make sure you stop), and Chain (clean and moving smoothly).
  • Tuck in Loose Items: Keep shoelaces tied tightly, tuck in pant legs, and make sure backpack straps can't dangle into the wheels or chain.
  • Ride Predictably: Ride in a straight line without swerving around parked cars or sidewalks.
  • Follow Traffic Signals: Stop completely at all stop signs and red lights. Look left, right, and left again before proceeding into an intersection.
  • Go with the Flow: Ride on the right side of the street, moving in the same direction as traffic (never against it).
  • Use Hand Signals: Let drivers and other cyclists know what you are doing by signaling left turns, right turns, and stops.
  • Stay Focused: Keep both hands on the handlebars, leave your phone packed in your backpack, and never wear headphones or earbuds while riding.
  • Yield to Pedestrians: If riding on a sidewalk, yield to people walking, give them plenty of space, and ring a bell or use your voice ("Passing on your left!") before riding past.

ARRIVAL TO AND DEPARTURE FROM SCHOOL:

The following rules are required when your child is on school grounds. Please understand that failure to comply with the rules may result in retraction of the privilege.

  • Dismount bike at ENTRANCE to the parking lot - Students must dismount their bike or e-bike at the ENTRANCE to the school's parking lot and WALK the bike via the sidewalk to the designated bike area in the Quad. Do not ride the bike or e-bike in the parking lot or on the parking lot sidewalk. Again, the bikes must be walked on the sidewalk.
  • Lock It Up: Secure the frame and at least one wheel to the school bike rack using a sturdy U-lock or heavy chain lock.
  • Power Down E-Bikes: Turn off the battery power switch, remove the key or display screen (if applicable), and keep them safe in your backpack during the school day.

ADDITIONAL RULES FOR E-BIKES:

  • Control Your Speed: Keep e-bike motor assistance on the lowest setting when near school zones or pedestrians. Do not ride faster than a normal bicycle pace (under 10–12 mph).
  • Brake Earlier: E-bikes are heavier and take longer to come to a full stop than standard pedal bikes. Begin squeezing your brake levers sooner than you normally would.
  • No Passengers: Never carry a friend on your pegs, handlebars, or seat. Elementary students should only ride single-rider bikes.
  • Respect Age & Class Limits: Ensure the e-bike is legally rated for young riders (Class 1 pedal-assist only; throttle-equipped or high-speed Class 2/3 e-bikes should not be operated by elementary students).

*Please note: Bike riding, skateboards, scooters, roller skates and sneakers with retractable wheels
are NOT PERMITTED to be ridden or used on campus.*
